E-passport

As MRP reissue was discontinued in February 2022, the only option now exists is e-passport.

Please read carefully all the instructions in this page before going to fill-in and submit the online application form. The link of the E-passport Online Registration Portal is given at the end of this page.

Who can apply for e-passport?

To apply for e-passport, you must have either a Bangladeshi NID card or a Birth Registration Certificate (BRC) having a 17 digit number which is verifiable at everify.bdris.gov.bd. In case of BRC, please make sure that the webpage having your verified BRC contains the necessary data, e.g. names of the applicant and the parents in English and they match with the corresponding data in your application. If they do not match, please contact the office from which the BRC was issued to do the necessary correction. Additionally, if you have become a US citizen, you need to show the Dual Nationality Certificate issued by the Government of Bangladesh. Otherwise, you are required to have a proof of your legal status in the US, e.g. valid visa or permanent resident card, etc.

If the existing Bangladeshi passport has more than one year validity, the applicant must submit a separate application showing a legitimate necessity.

Submission of Application and Enrolment

While filling-in the online application, you need to choose Washington mission as your passport office and your present address must be an address in the USA.

It is mandatory to seek appointment and appear in-person for biometric enrolment after online submission of the application. Online appointment system at epassport.gov.bd resumed on 20 April 2022; hence we are no longer scheduling appointment by email. You can now schedule appointment during the process of applying online. If you have submitted the application earlier, please log into your account at epassport.gov.bd and schedule the appointment.

Please choose any available timeslot (either of regular or express delivery) to schedule your appointment. The appointment system is automatically operated within e-passport portal (epassport.gov.bd) which is maintained by the Department of Immigration and Passports in Dhaka. The Embassy has no access to the appointment system; so it is not possible for the Embassy to entertain requests for scheduling appointment.

After scheduling appointment, please carefully go through this entire webpage to make sure you are fully prepared for the biometric enrolment.

'Reschedule/Cancel Your Appointment' option has been added. In case of an application, you can use this option only once by signing into your account at epassport.gov.bd.

Please do not send your application package or any document related to e-passport application by mail as you are required to come in-person by scheduling appointment. After biometric enrolment, your existing original passport is immediately given back to you.

After submission of your online application, if you find that certain data need to be corrected, please do not worry. Please correct the printout with pen. The official of the Embassy will make necessary changes to your application during biometric enrolment at the Embassy. Before completing your enrolment, you will be shown the draft delivery slip. You can sign the delivery slip after checking all your information.

Payment of Fees

Please  make a money order or cashier check or official check (not older than 30 days) payable to the 'Embassy of Bangladesh'. Cash or personal check or online payment is not accepted. While filling-in online application, please select 'Offline Payment'. In case of more than one applications submitted together, separate payment has to be made for each applicant. You are required to submit the money order or cashier check or official check in-person during biometric enrolment at the Embassy. If you want to upgrade delivery type from 'regular' to 'express', please bring the required amount for the 'express' delivery. On the contrary, those who have submitted online application for 'express' delivery are not allowed to change it to 'regular' option.

Instructions (Very Important):
While coming to the Embassy for biometric enrolment, please do not forget to bring all the required documents including
  1. Application Summary, i.e. confirmation page of the online submission having barcode,
  2. the submitted complete application form having barcode,
  3. money order/cashier check/official check as per the table of fees shown above,
  4. most recent original Bangladeshi passport (if lost, GD/police report containing the number of the lost passport),
  5. copy of Bangladeshi NID or copy of the webpage having BRC verified at everify.bdris.gov.bd,
  6. copy of Dual Nationality Certificate issued by the Government of Bangladesh (if you are a US citizen),
  7. copy of legal status in the US, e.g. valid visa, permanent resident card, or a notarised affidavit that you are not a US citizen,
  8. copy of marriage/divorce registration certificate (if applicable),
  9. relevant supporting document (PR Card/Job ID/Student ID/Driving License, etc.), if there is any change in data from the most recent Bangladeshi passport, and
  10. any other documents that might be applicable to you as per the following link: https://www.epassport.gov.bd/instructions/instructions

Delivery

By mail: The applicant can provide either at the the time of enrolment or later a prepaid, self-addressed return envelope (USPS only) with tracking number and a copy of Bangladeshi NID card of himself/herself or that of the authorized representative so that when the new passport is ready for issuance, it can be delivered by mail. In case of providing the NID copy of the authorized individual, an authorization letter has to be submitted and it must contain the signatures of both the applicant and the authorized person. Return envelope of FedEx is not accepted as it charges the Embassy, rather than the applicant for overweight of the return mail (or for any other reasons). When the new passport comes from Dhaka and is officially received through the e-passport software at the Embassy, a system generated email with common template goes to the applicant from the Department of Immigration & Passports in Dhaka requesting the applicant to pick-up the passport from the local passport office, i.e. the Embassy in this case. Please do not get confused by this 'pick-up' message because if you have already provided the return envelope and copy of NID, your new passport will be mailed to you.

In-person: The applicants who neither have NID of their own nor of anyone who agrees to send his/her NID to be used for issuance on their behalf may walk-in to the Embassy between 3 pm to 4 pm on business days after getting the update from epassport.gov.bd that the passport is ready for issuance at the local passport office.

Mailing Address (only for sending return envelope, not for sending application)
