Mujibnagar Day observed in befitting manner
DHAKA, April 17, 2014 (BSS)- The historic Mujibnagar Day commemorating the formation of provisional government of Bangladesh was observed in a befitting manner today.
The first independent and sovereign government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh took oath of office at the mango grove at Baidyanathtala of Meherpur sub-division in Kushtia district on this day in 1971.
Earlier, on April 10 of the same year, the provisional government of Bangladesh renamed as the Mujibnagar Government was constituted with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as President,Syed Nazrul Islam as Acting President in absence of Bangabandhu,Tajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister, Captain M Mansur Ali, Finance Minister, AHM Quamaruzzaman, Home Minister and Khondokar Mostaque Ahmed, Foreign Minister.
The day was observed with elaborate programmes in Dhaka,Mujibnagar in Meherpur district and other places across the country. At sunrise, the national flag and party flag were hoisted atop Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, Awami League central and district offices throughout the country.
Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina initiated the day's programme by placing of a wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi at 7 in the morning. Later, Sheikh Hasina along with party stalwarts placed another wreath there on behalf of Awami League as a mark of respect and gratitude to Bangabandhu.
Members of the cabinet and party central leaders including Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Tofail Ahmed, Begum Matia Chowdhury,Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Quader, Advocate Sahara Khatun, Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Mujibul Huq, Dr Hasan Mahmud, Shahriar Alam, Advocate Afzal Hossain, Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap were present, among others.
As soon as Prime Minister left Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, leaders of different political parties, social-cultural-professional bodies and hundreds of people from all walks of life in a long queue placed wreaths there paying their deep respect to Bangabandhu.
Leaders of Dhaka City Awami League (AL), Awami Juba League, Jatiya Sramik League, Krishak League, Awami Swechchasebak League, Mahila Awami League, Juba Mahila League and Chhatra League placed wreaths there marking the day.
Later, central leaders of AL and associate bodies and other organisations also placed wreaths at the Banani graves of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed and Captain M Mansur Ali while wreaths also was placed at the Rajshahi grave of Shaheed AHM Quamaruzzaman. Special prayers were offered at Banani seeking peace of the departed souls of the Shaheed independence leaders and for peace and prosperity of the country and its people.
In Mujibnagar, the programmes of the day began with hoisting of the national and party flags at 6 am, placing of wreaths at the Memorial there at 11 am, presenting of guard of honour at 11-15 am and holding of a discussion at Sheikh Hasina Mancha at 11-30 am.
Awami League Advisory Council member Amir Hossain Amu, party presidium member and chairman of the Mujibnagar Day Observance Committee Mohammad Nasim, joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, organising secretary BM Mozammel Huq were present, among others.
The two-day programme at Mujibnagar began with the hoisting of national and party flags at 6 am when a smartly turned out squad of Asar presented guard of honour to the chief guest Amir Hossain Amu at Sheikh Hasina Mancha there.
AL presidium member and chairman of the Mujibnagar Day Observance Committee Mohammad Nasim chaired the discussion at Sheikh Hasina Mancha. Amir Hossain Amu addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
In the city, Dhaka City Awami League organised a discussion in front of party central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the afternoon. Acting president of Dhaka City AL MA Aziz chaired the discussion. AL presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury attended as the chief guest.
Shilpakala Academy organised a special cultural function depicting the War of Liberation on its premises at Segunbagicha while institutions across the country have also been observing the day with discussions, cultural functions and screening of films based on the Liberation War.
Dhaka Division unit of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised a discussion at its Gulshan office marking the day.
